Invite to Coaching Workshop UCD Monday March 14th

We are hosting our very first Fun Direction coaching workshop next Monday March 14th from 9.45am -1.30pm in the Blue Room in the UCD Student Centre . We are delighted to be joined by Antonio Mantero, founder of and the Coach House After-School Development Centre. Antonio is unique in Ireland in his thinking and writing about best practice for coaching children. He also runs the Silent Sideline project in Ireland which is best summed up by his motto “Let the Kids Play!” Antonio’s work touches on all aspects of children’s participation in sport, not least advocating for more and better coaching of children that haven’t traditionally participated in sport.

The workshop is free and open to anyone age 16 or over who might be willing to volunteer for 1-2 hours per month coaching on the project in their local area. While we will have students from UCD attending, it is open to outsiders too and no prior experience of coaching (or playing) sport is necessary ! Please pass on the invite to anyone you believe may be interested in attending. Places can be secured by completing the details on the coach application page of our website. While today is International Womens Day, opportunities for females is at the core of what Fun Direction does week-in, week-out and that includes introducing and encouraging female coaches that will act as powerful role models for the girls who attend the project !

Myself and Antonio hope to give participants some insight into good coaching principles for children in the FUNdamental phase (age 5-8) when acquiring fundamental movement skills is crucial. We believe those principles translate across all sports. There will be some practical elements as well as theory !

Many thanks to Professor Joe Carthy from UCD in the Community who are promoting Project Fun Direction with students and staff and who have also been very generous with providing us access to the UCD campus.
