Fun Direction visit Essen
Our recent trip to Bevern and Essen to visit our friends in Kicking Girls was a huge success again building on last years first trip. This year we took 12 girls, 9 mothers, 2 grandmothers and 2 dads ! As always, Kicking Girls put on a fantastic 3 days of activities for us and we’re indebted to them for the experience the Fun Direction girls get.
We spent Friday morning visiting 2 schools in Bevern and Essen before joining in the Kicking Girls activity in Bevern. Kicking Girls reaches over 4,000 girls in 250 schools across 60 cities each week in Germany. It is a true inspiration for people looking to put young girls on a pathway towards sports participation and physical activity. We’re delighted to be welcoming two of their young female coaches on a 3 month internship to Dublin this September, something which will really help us expand our project further in Dublin.
The Fun Direction girls get to bond around sport for 3 days and 2 nights, experiencing a different culture. It’s also a great chance for their mothers and families to bond with them around sport. The girls join our trip from different venues so not all know each other before we travel. It’s amazing to see new friendships flourish and existing friendships being further cemented. It’s also very heartening to see the older girls in the groups watching out for the younger girls and taking them under their wings.
We spent Saturday visiting the old historic city of Osnabruck, spending time in the University of Osnabruck which is the headquarters of the Kicking Girls project. It’s a great experience for the girls to see the fantastic facilities available in a modern university. The annual visit is a great opportunity for a new groups of our girls each year to experience a trip we hope they remember for the rest of their lives.
